Hotel Trujillo Honduras – Get Hiking In A Rainforest Within The Caribbean

Nearly four days into my month long journey on the North coast of Honduras and I could not be more relaxed. Tranquility Bay HoteI Trujillo Honduras has been a great decision. I chose to stay here for the initial couple of weeks of my vacation. Literally an hour or two away by sea from its more widely known neighbors the Bay Islands of Roatan and Utilla, Trujillo Bay is just the type of location I really like. Not really visited by the main tourist set, Trujillo boasts a wealth of pristine beaches plus some great Central American features… essentially, the best of both worlds: the Caribbean vibe combined with the Central American natural splendor!

Following my two boat tours earlier this week, I decided to head out and visit one of the more typically Central American areas of Trujillo Bay. Behind the town you have the spectacular Capiro and Calentura mountains. The mountains house one of the only protected rain forests in Honduras so a number of us made a decision to take advantage! A word of recommendation: it is a trip not best done with out a guide. It’s not so much for safety in a crime sense, but more the risk of getting lost, since the mountain is massive!

The hike was an undertaking but, if you spread it across the whole day to undertake it like we did, it is a relaxing and stimulating experience. It’s about 6km to the peak so we headed out at around 6am to make the thirty minutes trip by car, to the best starting place to explore the mountain. So, what can I say? The wild life was over and above exceptional. I’d heard rumors of a big cat or two – these were not found, but we did get to explore an area abundant with local wild life. The monkeys were notably cool, there is an entire colony in the mountain. Naturally they weren’t hopping on our shoulders, however they came a whole lot closer than we imagined they would! The reptile population is also exceptional. Trujillo has an amazing amount of Iguana lizards, which are still at risk of being hunted by locals regardless of their protected status. It’s sad really because they are such lovely creatures.

Just the rich colors within the place, kept me thrilled for most of the day! Among the best things about Capiro and Calentura is the location of the natural springs and water falls at really handy distances! Nothing is better after a couple of hours of trekking (although we were not exactly speeding!) than cooling down in a pool. I did not think to bring swimming gear along but other folks did and hugely appreciated jumping in! We picnicked next to one the prettiest falls about 3/4 of the way up and it was without doubt one of the most relaxing experiences I have had for years! The view from the top is spectacular. I’ve been blessed with good weather this trip so we could actually see the Bay Islands.

This is exactly what I enjoy about staying in hotels in Trujillo Honduras – you will find such a number of sights nearby.

Following our long day’s activity, Carlos, the manager in residence drove us back to Tranquility Bay and then we all chilled out, watching the sunset in the hammocks. An ideal end to a perfect day!

I’ll be writing other reports of my excursions before I leave, so keep a look out! To date staying at Tranquility Bay Hotel Trujillo Honduras has been a fantastic choice.
