Shimba Hill restocking with wildlife

BOOK Shimba Hills National Wildlife Replenishment

Kenya Wildlife Service has begun restocking the Shimba Hills National Reserve to various animals wild to enhance biodiversity and improve the visitor experience.

The restocking operation funded by the Eden Wildlife for a sum of Kshs.2, 750,000.00 is one of the many projects that the team from the UK charity for the conservation of wildlife has funded. The movement of animals wild in Tsavo East National Park over a distance of 150 km of coastal forests include treasured Kenya 100 impalas, giraffes Kongoni 15 and 50.

Restocking plans to attract more visitors not only to the Shimba Hills National Reserve, but also The Elephant Sanctuary Mwaluganje Community. The grazing area in the Shimba Hills ecosystem has been underutilized due to a small number of mammals. Many tourists Shimba Hills expect to see not only a beautiful coastal rainforest, but also a variety of wildlife, but disappointed to see limited playing. The repopulation is intended to address this challenge. The reserve is the only place in Kenya with great people, but endangered sable antelope. Other animals found wild in the park include elephants, monkeys, of Columbus, leopard, serval cat and hyena.

Shimba Hills located 35 km southwest of Mombasa through Likoni Ferry offers abundant scenic picnic and observation points: Makadara Picnic Site, Giriamas Point, Point of View of the Sea, Pengo and elephant Cerro Mirador Mirador. Shimba Hills are wrapped in a cloak of ancient forests, one of the largest contiguous pieces in eastern Africa. More than a thousand species of plants have been recorded, quarter of them endemic to the area.

The proximity of ecosystems near the coast means it has the potential to attract a large number of visitors on tours short of the coast to see the elephants. The Shimba Hills are considered one of the most diverse forest ecosystems in the coastal region as 15 percent of rare plants in the Shimba Hills are endemic to the coast and more than 50 percent of the 159 species of rare plants known to occur in Kenya are in the ecosystem.

The ecosystem is an important watershed, providing drinking water to local and regional level. Shimba Hills are a permanent source of three rivers, including: Marere / Manolo / Pemba River, Mkurumudzi and Ramisi. Marere spring water in the Shimba Hills reserve is provided to Kwale, Mombasa and the coast south of Mombasa. Waterfalls in the mountains serve as attractions, while the forest tends to moderate temperatures and promote local rainfall.
