An introduction to the Aeroponics
Most people are familiar with the idea of hydroponics – growing plants in water – but Aeroponics is not known. In fact, I just had to add the word to my spell checker. In short, aeroponics is the cultivation of plants in the air.
For Of course there is more to it, as the plants do not do very well in normal air. The roots of plants grown aeroponically (is that a word?) Are suspended a confined space and water and nutrients are sprayed on the roots. The main stem and leaves of outdoor stay above the container enclosing the roots, allowing them for air and light.
History
In 1942 W. culture Carter first investigated growing air and describes a method of growing plants steam water, using the method to the study of plant roots easier, but it was FW I was the first who coined the air-growing process as "aeroponics" in 1957.
Commercial aeroponics initial configuration was the genesis of the root system, commonly called the Genesis Machine by GTi in 1983. The device was controlled by a microchip and simply plugged into an electrical outlet and a water faucet.
Today Aeroponics
Aeroponics is very popular for the cloning of plants from cuttings. Many plants thought to be difficult or impossible to clone are now much easier. It has even used in space for experiments of the plant from the 1960 and NASA has been developing inflatable aeroponic greenhouses for use on Mars.
Benefits of Aeroponics
- Less Fertilizer – From all the nutrients found, not ending in groundwater or sinking too deep into the soil to be of some help.
- Less water – very important for space travel and arid climates. Much of the water is lost in traditional gardening is water that evaporates from the earth. The only other sinks beyond the roots and the plants do not have the opportunity drinking.
- More Economical – Because unless you need a nutrient solution in hydroponic culture compared to the costs of operating an aeroponic garden less to operate a hydroponic garden. There are also fewer moving parts and complicated systems involved.
- Disease Harm Reduction – Because the plants are separated from each other and not sharing the same soil, infection of a plant has a probability much smaller spread to other plants.
Aeroponics has some drawbacks. The initial cost to get things under way can be higher than that of a garden or container garden tradition. Also there are more things that can break or stop working, leaving their plants in the lurch.
Aeroponics home
You've probably seen the ads for the AeroGrow AeroGarden. It is the easiest way to get started in aeroponics and comes in various sizes. You can buy kits of seeds of herbs, lettuces and more, or use their own seed with the system. It is a great way to have fresh herbs, lettuce and longer during throughout the year.
If you are looking for something a little bigger, how about the General Assembly Hydroponics RainForest 318 with 18 three-inch pots growth. This would be a great job for growing leaf lettuce for a small family or growing your own army of Venus flytrap.
If you are more of a "do it yourself" there are plenty of online resources with information and materials to create your own aeroponic garden.
Aeroponics is for everyone? Probably not, but it is a fascinating way to grow plants and can be very educational for children and adults. Try it today!
