Peru Amazon Jungle – Tambopata and Iquitos
The Andean country of Peru in South America has more than fifty nature reserves, parks national protected areas and sanctuaries, which means that about five percent of the land surface is covered by these parks. The Tambopata – Candamo Reserved Zone and the Manu Biosphere Reserve is located in southern Peru Amazon jungle, while in the north of the Pacaya-Samiria is the largest protected area.
walk a half hour flight from Cusco, landing in Puerto Maldonado, is relatively easy access to the Tambopata-Candamo. This area of the reserve consists of three different ecosystems – the Amazon basin flat, the eastern slopes of the Andes and the plains ecosystem. As a result of this environmental diversity more than eleven different types of forests have been able to live and produce a rich biodiversity, among the densest of life on the planet. There are 1,234 types of butterflies, 592 species of birds, 152 varieties of dragonflies, 135 kinds of ants, 127 species of amphibians, 103 types of mammals, 94 species of fish, 74 types of reptiles, 40 species of termites and 39 varieties of bees found in southern Peru. The Tambopata area is home to the largest macaw clay licks natural in the world, known as the Macaw Lick. Thousands of parrots and macaws are attracted to these copper-colored cliffs which graze on mineral salts contained in the area that helps with digestion of the berry and fruits.
The most remote Manu Biosphere Reserve covers 18,811 km square of land located to travel several hours from Cusco. Manu is said to be the only virgin rainforest, access to the left in the world. A variety of habitats including high Andes, the lowland rainforests and cloud forests to provide intermediate an area that is super rich in flora and fauna with many species and is one of the best surviving example of very high density of biodiversity in protected areas of rainforest.
Because it has remained relatively unchanged by human activity, Manu Reserve is home to a large number of species living in their original habitats, such as giant otter, black caiman, the jaguar, the spectacled bear, tapir, ocelot, several species of monkeys and nearly a thousand species of birds. Manu is also home to one tenth part of the world's species-carrying liquid vegetable including several species of palms and figs as well as numerous medicinal plants. There are also up to 220 species recorded of trees in one hectare of tropical forest in Manu Reserve area indicates the high density of the area.
In the northern jungle, located 120 km river from Iquitos, is the Pacaya – Samiria. There is also a great variety of flora and fauna of this reserve including Paiche huge fish can weigh up to 300 kilograms and measure up to three meters in length. Paiche is, in fact, freshwater fish largest on Earth. A number of other rare animals can be seen in the reserve as pink dolphins, manatees, large river turtles, giant otters, black spider monkeys, black caiman, woolly monkeys and a variety of birds from the Amazon.
