The Jaguar and Why He is the Keystone Cop of the Jungle

The jaguar or panthera onca has to be one of the most magnificent animals on Earth. Perhaps the more beautiful. Only the tiger and lion are larger cats. Our Maya friend Aniceto says we have a jaguar den on our ranch, probably a stone cave shallow limestone covered by dense vegetation. Part of our ranch is virgin rainforest.

We have never seen our jaguar, but it has. One night, returning their "milpa" saw him in the middle of the road. In general, do not go at all when there is light, but not this one. The jaguar or "El Tigre" as is called for the Maya, probably hungry and looking for a sod, badger or javelin. Humans eat the same food, but that turf barbecue and the jaguar bites down premiums.

The jaguar kills its prey by biting the neck and skull of his victim. As the keystone predator in the jungle, the jaguar serves a function for the consumption of predators kill smaller prey. Except for man, the jaguar has no enemies. Not many friends either, but that comes with being in the top of the food chain and has very nasty bite.

My friends Mayans say that I can never remember an incident where a jaguar attacked a human. That certainly does not mean a jaguar attack to human nature but in fact do not. Still, when most of Maya into the jungle, carrying a shotgun.

It is evident that man more afraid of the jaguar jaguar man. Mayan men speak of times when he was surprised to look to the side of the road and find a jaguar sleeping peacefully, in the deep forest "El Tigre" take a nap wherever he pleases.

The jaguar can not be tamed and has little fear of man. It is also considered that more unpredictable behavior of all animals in captivity. Jaguars are not intended to be in captivity. It is not what they do. Jaguars are connected by one thing and not nothing to do with cages.

One familiar with the Mayan jungle jaguar can detect tracks, dung and plant life of the jaguar disturbed while traveling through the jungle. To an untrained eye such signs go unnoticed. Rule number one is when in the deep forest to a man through the jungle as a guide.

Unfortunately, the jaguar can climb trees and have been seen jumping from tree to tree. Therefore the tree house they plan to build on my farm will not provide protection against jaguar … ja. I guess sleep one night and wake up a pair of big eyes staring into the face, perhaps a giant boa or maybe a jaguar.

My only concern is that one day we will be out walking on the ranch and come across the moat with jaguars little of it … oh, boy. Well, nobody said that the forest was free of risks. The Jaguar, however, is eating well cattle, sheep, turkeys and dogs.

Several weeks ago, Aniceto took me back to the jungle and saw dog hairs in the faeces of a jaguar. Aniceto said that his friend had two dogs eaten by the jaguar one night … and his friend could hear the dogs howling as the jaguar, the dragged the jungle. Since dog is man's best friend, the sound had to be unnerving.

Several months earlier, his friend's cousin shot a jaguar, trying to become a sheep. It took four men to carry out the jaguar in the jungle. Jaguars can grow to 200 pounds and eight feet long including the tail. That makes King & Stone corner of the forest ecosystem.

The Mayas are predators and not endangered. perceptions of a change if you have small children playing palapa jungle, "El Tigre" can certainly be considered much of a predator threat. But, fortunately, is not heard of jaguars fodder for humans outside the small towns way back in the jungle. The jaguar is smart enough to leave children alone … jaguar common sense, probably passed down from generation generation.

The jaguar is a representative of the true nature and what can not be tamed. For most of us, the jaguar is a symbol of the magnificence nature and that nature has created over the eons even a very nasty bite.

Let's hope that both maintain the respect and distance and find no ourselves looking at each other at night pitch black forest. And that's very good for us, because in the deep jungle that the advantage always great jaguar …
