Brazilian beef — greater impact on the environment than we realize
Increased export of Brazilian beef indirectly leads to deforestation in the Amazon. New research from Chalmers and SIK that was recently published in Environmental Science & Technology shows that impact on the climate is much greater than current estimates indicate. The researchers are now demanding that indirect effect on land be included when determining a product’s carbon footprint.

rainforest plants have many adaptations to their environment. With more than 80 inches of rain years, plants have adaptations that help them repel water from their leaves quickly so the branches are not oppressed and broken. Many plants have drip tips and leaves ribbed, and some leaves have shed layers of oily water. To absorb sunlight as much as possible in the dark understory, leaves are very large. Some trees have leaf stalks that turn with the movement of the sun to always absorb the maximum amount of light. The leaves in the upper canopy are dark green, small and leathery to reduce water loss in strong sunlight. Some large trees grow leaves in the lower canopy and small leaves in the canopy. Other plants growing in the canopy of larger trees for sunlight. These are the epiphytes such as orchids and bromeliads.
